IMPRONTA and the UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires) have developed a mathematical algorithm based on integer linear programming to optimize drainage areas, to reduce costs in facilities and pipelines as well as to minimize the impact on the environment. This algorithm is adapted from a longer set packing algorithm used in the mechanical and textile industries.
This new algorithm was integrated into a GIS (Geographic Information System) resulting in the implementation of UFO (Unconventional Field Optimizator). UFO will provide an integrated and friendly front end to the oil operators to design and optimize development plans for unconventional hydrocarbon.
